Papa dropped me and Patti off at the C-Wall Theater on Saturday morning, while he went to the dock to sell some crates of crabs. He even gave us money for popcorn.

I spotted some of the kids from school. Spikes and his brothers were at the front of the line buying their tickets.

“Well, if it ain’t your little girlfriend.” Spikes’ older brother pointed at me.

Spikes slapped him on the side of his head. “Shut up, cochon!

His brothers always teased him because he didn’t have any friends. Probably because he kept his head in some weird book all the time. Neither one of us wanted any friends when we first met…and we started off fighting right away. Then we kind of grew on each other.

Tommy walked up behind us, his buddies close behind. “You’re out of your territory, ain’t you, levee rat?”

I turned to face him, with my fists balled up and my lower lip stuck out. “What’d you call me?”

“I wasn’t talking to you,” he scowled. “I was talking to Patti LeBlanc. The orphaned levee rat.” He scuffed his boot across the tile.

I stuck out my chin and got a little closer. “She’s my friend. So don’t be calling her names either, or no telling what I might do.”

Tommy’s friends turned the other way and snickered. Tommy looked down, but he couldn’t lose face with his buddies. “Okay, okay. No teasing the girls from the other side of the levee. I guess you have to get out of the swamps sometime.”

I scrunched my eyebrows together and put my hands on my hips. I had told him last year that I learned some voodoo spells from a witch so he’d be afraid of me. I wasn’t sure how long he’d believe that lie. But for now, he backed off.

About the Book:

Nikki Landry is turning eleven years old, and is looking forward to riding her bike to school. That is until it falls apart. Papa can’t afford a new one. Is she doomed to ride the smelly old school bus from now on?

Hearing of an old pirate ship, and a legend about long-ago pirates burying treasure on a nearby swamp island, Nikki sees a way out. But when she makes a birthday wish for the pirate’s gold, things go terribly wrong. Did her wish trigger an ancient curse?

Join Nikki and her friends as they find themselves sailing away aboard a haunted schooner with ghostly pirates into the Gulf of Mexico … and into the year eighteen fourteen.

How will they ever find their way back home?

Meet the Author:

Rita Monette was born and raised in Southwest Louisiana. She loves to write stories set in the beautiful, yet mysterious, bayous and swamps of her home state.

Her middle grade series, The Nikki Landry Swamp Legends, is based on tales told by her father—who made his living in those bayous—of reasons to stay out of the swamp.

She currently lives with her husband, four lap dogs, and one lap cat, in the mountains of Tennessee. Besides writing and illustrating, she loves watching the many birds that make their habitat on the Cumberland Plateau, working in the garden, and frequenting waterfalls.
