The first two substitutes have taken their place in the Annual Bull-Knox Sunflower Contest.
Radders’ and Coops’ sunflowers are out of the competition after the bunnies broke through the security netting and munched the baby plants.
First and second substitutes Caz and Abbey are now in their places.
The four remaining subs, Kevin, Debbie, Nicky and Elena will be hopeful to get in the game soon!
The bunnies have breached the security netting and munched the top of Radders’ sunflower.
The netting has been repaired and Radders’ flower will be monitored to see if it can survive. If not, Caz’s plant, which is the first sub, will take its place.
The sunflowers have taken their places along the blue fence at Fort Bull-Knox!
Positions were randomly allocated and all sunflowers were transferred to the garden with equal care.
Competitors are (from left to right): Kirsty, Moomin Papa, Abi, Clarky, Knoxie, Moomin Mama, Jojo, Radders, Gilbey, Kathryn, Marky, Princess, John H and Coops.
A net has been positioned over the sunflowers in an attempt to protect them from the leaf loving bunnies. However, a new threat in the form of a playful puppy, Fozzy, has now been introduced.
Six substitute sunflowers are waiting in the wings and will be hoping one of the starters meets an unfortunate fate so they can take its place in the competition.
Danger averted. A snail was intercepted as it headed towards Kevin’s sunflower today.
I’m happy to report that all the sunflowers are unnibbled and doing well despite this slimy threat.
Kathryn’s, Radders’, Kirsty’s and Moomin Papa’s shoots are the tallest so far.
Clarky’s plant, which was smallest at the last inspection, has had a growth spurt. Knoxie’s and Moomin Mama’s have now been over-taken and look like they could do with some encouragement.
All the sunflower seeds have made it to the baby sunflower phase!
Moomin Mama’s was the first to appear after just five days and by day ten, when John’s plant showed up, all the contestants’ seeds had sprouted.
Of the 14 main competitors, Princess’s, Kirsty’s, Coops’ and Moomin Papa’s plants look the biggest and Clarky’s shoot is the smallest.
There’s a long way to go yet though!
All six subs are looking strong and will be hoping for a sunflower casualty to get themselves in the game.
Things will get interesting when the sunflowers move to Fort Bull-Knox and could well be eaten by the resident lawn-mowers, Pongo and Indie!
Pongo and Indie
The seeds are in!
Twenty sunflower seeds have been planted, marking day one of the 2nd Annual Bull-Knox Sunflower Contest.
Fourteen seeds were picked by quick off the mark facebook friends to take part in this coveted competition.
A further six seeds were chosen by less nifty but still pretty quick friends to be substitutes. Subs will enter the game should any of the original competitors be eaten by snails or bunnies or suffer any equally unfortunate fate.
2015 competitors are: Jojo, Knoxie, Princess, John, Marky, Radders, Moomin Mama, Moomin Papa, Abi, Coops, Kathryn, Gilbey, Clarky and Kirsty.
Subs: Caz, Abbey, Kevin, Debbie, Nicky and Elena.
Nigel Bull, aka Dad, aka Moomin Papa will initially be taking care of the seeds, offering them all equal care and attention, until they grow to a reasonable size.
The baby sunflowers will then move to Fort Bull-Knox and take their place along the blue fence where they risk being a tasty rabbit snack.
The tallest sunflower will be the winner. Good luck to all!
